Let’s start from Lauttasaari, fondly known as “happy island”. Built in 1958, Luoteisväylä 18–20 is a fine example of the beautiful and serene aesthetic of old Lauttasaari. This building was renovated in 1998 and it is located in a neighbourhood that is popular among families with children and people who enjoy an active and outdoorsy lifestyle.

Lauttasaari has excellent public transport connections in many directions. The West Metro line means the city centre is only five minutes away, and it is also easy to reach by foot or bicycle. There are also many services nearby. All of this is important to the residents of Lumo homes, as sustainability is an important criterion for them in housing.

When Metropolia University of Applied Sciences moved to new premises a couple of years ago, several properties around Helsinki became available for renovation and residential redevelopment. The crown jewel among these vacated properties is the former main building of the Helsinki University of Technology at Abrahaminkatu 1–5. It faces the lively Hietalahdentori square, which is home to the popular Hietsu flea market.

There is also a pair of buildings left vacant by Metropolia University of Applied Sciences next to Hietalahdentori square. Located at Bulevardi 31 and Lönnrotinkatu 34, the Vanha Kemia and Uusi Kemia buildings are being transformed into stunning new Lumo homes in a manner that respects their original architecture.

Let’s continue our adventure through the old districts of Helsinki. Next, we’re going to Töölö, which is known for its parks, beautiful buildings of various ages and various cultural attractions. Töölönkatu 11–15 was completed in several stages between 1925 and 1938. The building originally served as a printing facility and office building for Weilin+Göös. Here you can find high rooms, deep windowsills, beautiful ceiling beams and attractive paned windows.

This building has a strong sense of community, which means that many Lumo residents – such as Hilla and Nea – have found not only a home but also new friends there.

If the apartments are small, you need a large courtyard. The architect Armas Lindgren designed a large working class housing block in Vallila about a hundred years ago. Today, it is the site of the largest enclosed block in Finland, which also has Lumo homes around its vast courtyard. The block is located between Somerontie, Sammatintie, Anjalantie and Kangasalantie. The Lumo homes are located at Somerontie 14.

The number of residents in this block was at its highest in the 1950s, and the nickname Apinalinna (Monkey Castle) is believed to come from that era.

“There were hundreds of kids running around the courtyard and they must have made quite a racket. Then someone wrote the name Apinalinna, Monkey Castle, on one of the columns,” explained long-time resident Harri Ahola in an interview a couple of years ago.

Kalasatama represents the new waterfront Helsinki at its best. Located right by the sea, Capellan puistotie 4 boasts excellent views and is a great example of how people live in this youthful and attractive district. Isoisänsilta bridge for pedestrians and cyclists is nearby, as are the running trails of Mustikkamaa and the city’s services

It is no wonder that Pekka Hyysalo, founder of the FightBack movement, was won over by the excellent opportunities for outdoor life and wide range of services in Kalasatama and the Lumo home he now resides in there. “We kind of fell in love with this,” Hyysalo says.

The last stop on your bike ride is the skyscraper Lumo One. It is a fascinating choice for pioneers and modern urbanites! The Redi shopping centre and Kalasatama metro station are right below Lumo One. The metro takes you to the Central Railway station in 6 minutes, Itäkeskus in 7 minutes and Tapiola in 19 minutes.

Upon completion in August 2022, Lumo One will be the tallest rental property in Finland. At 120.5 metres in height, the building’s upper floors will have a visibility of 41 kilometres in clear weather.
