Discover Vuosaari: Helsinki’s most scenic and welcoming neighbourhood
Vuosaari, the maritime gem of East Helsinki, combines the best of nature and urban life. It’s easy to fall for Vuosaari’s charm, and there’s no rush to go anywhere – unless it’s off on an adventure into nature.
Chosen as Helsinki’s most beautiful district, Vuosaari is a vibrant and diverse area that appeals to both residents and visitors. Pekka Pirkkala, a producer at Visit Vuosaari, has lived in the area for over 40 years and particularly loves its coastal and nature-centric atmosphere.
“There’s more coastline and green spaces in Vuosaari than in any other district in Helsinki,” Pirkkala points out.
According to Pirkkala, the best place to enjoy nature is Vuosaarenhuippu, which offers impressive views.
It is the highest point in the area, perfect for a jog or a leisurely stroll. Pirkkala mentions that seven wild boars were spotted there not long ago.
“Nature feels so close here. At moments like that, it’s hard to believe how near we are to the city,” Pirkkala laughs.
The rustle of reeds and the scent of the sea
Maisa Jaaksola agrees that the landscapes are the best part of Vuosaari. She has many fond childhood memories of the area and believes many would be surprised by the natural beauty the neighbourhood offers.
“You can’t talk about Vuosaari without mentioning nature, as cliché as it sounds. For me, it’s specifically the beaches and pine forests that are my soul’s landscape, where I find peace,” Jaaksola says.
Jaaksola recommends visiting Kallahti beach, which holds many dear childhood memories for her.
“Kallahti is a special place for me. There’s a shallow beach where you could almost walk to the small islands. When I think of Vuosaari now, especially Kallahti, the scent of the salty sea and reeds fills my mind,” Jaaksola reminisces.
Everything you need is close by
Fea-Victoria Vinter also loves Vuosaari, having spent her childhood there and lived in the area as an adult. The neighbourhood remains dear to Vinter, especially since her child was born a local.
“Vuosaari is a dream for dog owners! In addition to countless walking paths, the Uutela dog park is perhaps the best in the entire metropolitan area,” Vinter says.
Vinter describes Vuosaari as her own peaceful kingdom, just the proper distance from the rest of Helsinki. However, getting around the capital is accessible with the metro, which offers quick, traffic-free journeys anywhere. Both ring roads also start from Vuosaari, making it convenient for drivers.
“On top of all this, Vuosaari offers a fantastic variety of areas and homes within one district. Everyone can find their favourite spot, and for enthusiastic swimmers, the seaside location is a paradise,” Vinter summarises.
Lumo homes offers various living options in Vuosaari, catering to various life stages. All have a homely and community feel. Whether you’re looking for a modern city flat for one or enough space for a family, Lumo homes has something to suit your needs.
“Vuosaari locals are easy-going and friendly”
Community spirit is also a big part of Vuosaari’s identity, and there is a great sense of togetherness in the area. Although Vuosaari is known for its international feel, Pekka Pirkkala notes that the area has more native Helsinkians than anywhere else in the city.
“Vuosaari is a very Stadi-like neighbourhood, and it’s easy to feel at home here. It’s a great example of how cultures can meet and blend. People here get along well together. A typical Vuosaari resident is definitely laid-back and friendly,” he sums up.
Vuosaari has also been awarded the title of ‘Neighbourhood of the Year,’ one of the main reasons is the community spirit and the local businesses working together. There are many community events, and according to the award’s recognition, other Finnish neighbourhoods could take a page out of Vuosaari’s book, Pirkkala proudly notes.
“Our country’s most important export port is also in Vuosaari.”
