Konala is a village-like community: "It's safe to live and grow up here"
The green suburb of Konala offers its residents peaceful surroundings just a stone’s throw from the heart of Helsinki. Konala is an old residential area with a housing selection that intriguingly combines the old and the modern.
Located in northwest Helsinki, Konala might first bring large retail parks and concrete jungles to mind. Still, locals know the area for its greenery and tranquil atmosphere.
While Konala offers the benefits of urban living, the area more closely resembles a village-like community.
Marja Kääriäinen, a salesperson for Lumo homes, spent their childhood and youth in Konala. According to Kääriäinen, one of the best things about the area is how almost everyone in Konala knows each other – their dearest friends are found right in the neighbourhood.
As an active dog owner who enjoys spending time outdoors, Kääriäinen also mentions Konala’s beautiful parks and green spaces. She has many wonderful childhood memories of Konala, including the soup lunches at the Vähätupa playground.
“Additionally, the city recently renovated a superb tennis court here! I still go there to play,” Kääriäinen says with a smile.
A diverse neighbourhood offers a suitable home for everyone
Maritta Hyvärinen has lived in Konala for over 30 years and firmly believes that the district truly offers something for everyone. Hyvärinen's favourite spot in Konala is naturally her beloved home and surrounding area. Still, she also emphasises the Ristikko shopping centre as the heart of the whole neighbourhood.
"Konala is wonderfully diverse, with detached houses, apartment buildings, and terraced houses from various decades. A pleasant mix of old and new," Hyvärinen summarises.
Hyvärinen points out that Konala's diversity isn't limited to its housing options, as residents come from all phases of life. In Konala, you might encounter young families with children in the playgrounds or long-time residents who have enjoyed the familiar neighbourhood's sense of community for years. The residents range from babies to elderly, Hyvärinen notes.
Konala is an excellent place to live in various situations. It has essential services nearby and convenient transport links across the Helsinki metropolitan area, whether by car or public transport.
"Even if your life situation changes, in Konala, you're always close to good services and a circle of friends," Hyvärinen says.
Konala grows and develops, but the peace remains
Although Konala has grown with more housing and residents, its peace has not been compromised – the old residential area has retained its unique atmosphere. According to Kääriäinen, what makes Konala special is its small size and sense of community, both worth cherishing. These are also factors that make the place safe.
"Konala is a small place between Pitäjänmäki and Malminkartano. It's like its own secret tribe. There's a good buzz here thanks to active residents," Kääriäinen explains.
Hyvärinen also enjoys the various activities and events in Konala. In autumn, she runs the Apple Market, where neighbours can share their apple harvest; you can bring your surplus apples from your own trees to the market or take some for your own use at no cost.
The anticipation of Christmas is crowned by the Advent Path, enabled by local volunteers, where windows across Konala reveal new 'doors' in the spirit of an advent calendar.
Hyvärinen wants to encourage people to approach Konala without prejudice. They emphasise that the area is much more than just the retail parks on Vihdintie.
"Konala is a diverse and somewhat surprising place that's easy to settle into. Welcome to explore!" Hyvärinen concludes.
