Maisa and Jussi Frimodig have fallen in love with their new home on the 24th floor of the Lumo One skyscraper. They only moved to Kalasatama in September, but their furniture and belongings have already found their place.

“We haven’t been to our summer place in Heinola as much as usual, because we really enjoy ourselves here,” says Maisa.

The view from the windows makes this Lumo home very special: one of the walls is a glass wall, which provides a bird’s-eye view of beautiful maritime Helsinki – or actually the whole centre of Helsinki. You will never get tired of this view.

“My eyes keep turning to the window when I’m reading a magazine at the kitchen table. We already know the ferry schedules well,” says Maisa with a laugh.

Jussi points to his favourite place, a yellow armchair in front of the window.

“I was sitting there and looking at the sea, Helsinki and the people far below, when suddenly there were two men behind the glass cleaning the windows from the outside,” says Jussi. Fortunately, the windows are cleaned by Lumo’s professionals because, as Jussi and Maisa state, the residents could not do it themselves.

Maisa and Jussi’s 50-square-metre home has everything they need: a living room, an open kitchen, a walk-in closet, a bathroom and a small library that leads to a comfortable bedroom through glass doors. In fact, the library was originally designated as a conservatory, a sort of indoor balcony, but the Frimodig couple turned it into a bright reading space. A balcony door opens from there, with safety glass in front; in the summer the door can and will surely be kept open.

“We have gradually reduced our belongings as we have moved to smaller and smaller apartments since we owned a detached house. Everything we need fits in here, and luckily the walk-in closet is big enough,” says Maisa.

Although the Frimodigs have only lived in the Lumo One skyscraper for a couple of months, they have already been to the movies three times. Going out for fun is really easy because the Redi shopping centre and its services are only an elevator ride away.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s sleeting or snowing in winter, because we don’t have to put on a coat and go outside to get to a store, a restaurant or even a movie. It’s a bit like living in a residential care home,” says Maisa.

“If we want to go a little further, for example, to the centre of Helsinki, we can get there by metro in six minutes. The metro station is also an elevator ride away,” adds Jussi.

The Frimodigs have a parking space in the parking garage under the house, and from there it is easy to visit the children and grandchildren and go to the cottage in Heinola. Jussi goes to a gym in Tapanila every week by car. Maisa’s hobby is closer to home, on Sörnäinen beach road.

“Now I finally have time to dance! I take dance lessons twice a week there,” says Maisa and points to the building where the dancing school is located. “I can get there quickly on foot.”

Both Maisa and Jussi are originally from Helsinki, making them native Helsinkians. They have changed homes in Helsinki flexibly according to their life situation. Their first joint home was a rented apartment in Alppila, where they moved after they got married in 1971. Then came an owner-occupied apartment in East Pasila and a detached house in Suutarila as the family grew.

After the children moved to their own homes, Maisa and Jussi moved a few more times, until the construction of the Lumo One skyscraper began.

“Our previous home in Jätkäsaari didn’t feel quite right. When the skyscraper was first announced, I suggested to Jussi that we should move there. Besides, I’ve always wanted to live in Kalasatama,” says Maisa.

Maisa and Jussi have lived in a Lumo home in Siltasaari before, so Lumo was a familiar landlord to them. They followed Lumo’s communication about the skyscraper project and immediately reserved the apartment of their choice from the top floors when it became possible. Living in an apartment building will not be difficult in the future because you can get everywhere with an elevator without needing to climb any stairs – accessibility tends to be a concern when people retire. 

The Frimodigs gave up their previous apartment in the spring and moved to a cottage in Heinola for the summer. Before that, they packed their belonging, which were taken to a small warehouse for the summer.

“We got a special 50 per cent discount for residents of the Lumo One building, so three months of storage wasn’t that expensive,” says Jussi.

When the new home was ready, the move went smoothly with the help of a familiar moving company. The residents’ moving times were scheduled in a way that the three elevators would not become too congested.

“When we got to our new home, our belongings were waiting inside, and we just put everything in its place.”
