Lumo homes’ energy saving challenge No. 1: make at least this smart energy decision
The winter has arrived, and energy is needed for heating. As much as 61% of energy consumed in our households is used for heating. If you are ready to make only one energy decision, reduce your heating.
Lowering the indoor temperature by one degree Celsius will reduce your energy consumption by up to 5%. You cannot feel the one degree Celsius reduction in the room temperature, but it has a major impact on energy consumption. Your functional capacity and alertness will also be boosted, and too high room temperatures are not healthy.
- The ideal room temperature in apartments is 20 degrees Celsius. If you feel cold after reducing the temperature, put on more clothes. Your body will get used to the lower temperature in a couple of weeks.
- Your bedroom temperature could be even 18 degrees Celsius, which will improve the quality of sleep.
- If you are uncertain about your room temperatures, buy a thermometer and adjust the desired temperature using the thermostat.
- If you are not home for longer periods of time, you can lower your room temperature even under 18 degrees Celsius. Do not turn off your heating completely.
- You should also reduce the temperature of your underfloor heating. The temperature is ideal when the floor does not feel cold or warm.
- If possible, utilise the time-controlled thermostat of the underfloor heating in the bathroom and adjust it to heat the floor during showering and right after it. Otherwise, it can be adjusted to the minimum heat. Remember that spending less time in the shower reduces the moisture load in the bathroom and the need for heating energy.
- If your home feels draughty, investigate the reason for this before increasing the temperature. It may be caused by inadequate insulation of the windows or wrongly adjusted ventilation.
