Public transport provides good connections to the university, the airport, and other parts of the city. The train station and bus station are within walking distance.
The Myllysaari outdoor recreation area offers a swimming beach, playgrounds, a sand field, saunas, and a sledding hill in winter. The Saimaa lakeside trail is ideal for family bike rides or Sunday walks. In winter, there are cross-country skiing trails and ski tracks on the ice of Lake Saimaa, starting from the city center. There are also several playgrounds near the city center, such as Marianpuisto and Pikku-Vesku.
