Nurmijärvi

Nurmijärvi is a safe and lively rural municipality surrounded by nature near the Helsinki area in the Uusimaa region.

The living environment in Nurmijärvi is rural, but the capital city is not far away. Many Nurmijärvi residents work in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, as it is easy to commute to work either by car or bus. Nurmijärvi is particularly popular among families.

The municipality is close to nature, even though there are apartment buildings in the population centres. The village centres are attractive and distinctive.

Historical Nurmijärvi

The archeological findings in Nurmijärvi indicate that the area has been inhabited already in prehistoric times. In the 16th century, there were already 15 villages in the area, and the administrative parish of Nurmijärvi was established in 1775. The beautiful wooden church located in Nurmijärvi’s Kirkonkylä area dates from the end of the 18th century. Nurmijärvi is named after a lake that was located in the middle of the municipality. The most famous Nurmijärvi resident is undoubtedly Aleksis Kivi, in honour of whom an annual event is held in Nurmijärvi. The birthplace of Aleksis Kivi is now a museum.

Country and town life

The majority of Nurmijärvi residents live in population centres such as Kirkonkylä, Klaukkala and Rajamäki. These areas have been attracting new residents, and migration in this century has been heavy especially from the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. Nurmijärvi’s excellent location close to nature but right next to the Helsinki region is the major reason for this. The Nurmijärvi area offers space to breathe and be. Convenient transport options are available and life is easy. Nature is present everywhere, but services are available close by. The municipality is investing in common functions, with focus on the well-being of children and their growth in a safe environment.
