Door 20: Alternatives for the Christmas dinner
Traditional Christmas ham is no longer part of everyone’s Christmas dinner. What are the the other options?
Enjoying Christmas ham with casseroles and rosolli is a long-awaited tradition for many, but you can also create a Christmas dinner according to the preferences or diet of your own Christmas party.
Nowadays, fish is valued in many ways. Could the centrepiece of your Christmas dinner be carefully prepared salmon, herring or perhaps perch?
For a vegan Christmas dinner, porkkala made with carrots could replace graved salmon and roe could be replaced by seaweed caviar. Christmas porridge can be cooked using coconut milk and the casseroles are also suitable for a vegan Christmas dinner, as long as the dairy products are replaced with plant-based products.
You can also use Christmas colours to create a unique Christmas dinner. You can create a red-green Christmas table with dishes like spinach soup, beetroot roast and pomegranate salad.
Traditional Christmas dishes can also be made using more exotic spices. How would you like a Christmas curry or a spicy Christmas stew?
If ham is part of your Christmas table, please remember that the leftover fat from roasting the ham is collected at Kinkkutemppu collection points throughout Finland. Instead of blocking drains at homes, the collected fat will be turned into renewable fuel.
