Lumo homes’ energy saving challenge No. 3: can you take a shower in three minutes?
Lumo challenges you to turn three-minute showers into a habit. Skimping on hot water significantly saves energy.
Saving hot water has a significant impact on energy consumption. A 15-minute shower 7 days a week is equivalent to a two-hour session in an electric sauna.
Long showers also increase the moisture load in the bathroom. Balancing it requires heat and enhanced ventilation, which also increases energy consumption.
If you have a habit of warming up under the shower, forget about it and opt to wear a woolly jumper instead. And forget about baths. A bath uses five times more water than a shower.
3 tips for a 3-minute shower
1. Turn off the shower while applying soap and shampoo.
2. Reduce the water pressure in the shower. The correct flow rate is 12 litres per minute.
3. If you are unsure how long you are spending in the shower, use your phone to set a three-minute timer.
If a short shower seems particularly difficult for a family member, suggest a shower challenge for the whole family: who can take a shower the fastest? You should choose something attractive as a reward!
Lumo homes is participating in the Down a degree campaign organised by Motiva, the Energy Authority, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment of Finland, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of the Environment and Sitra.
