Lumo homes’ energy saving challenge No. 4: spot 4 redundant standby modes from your home

Has it occurred to you that home appliances do not need to be in a continuous standby mode? Appliances in standby mode consume a surprisingly large amount of electricity, up to 5–10% of the amount used by the household. Read our tips and check your standby modes!

The rule of thumb for using electrical appliances is simple: when not using them, turn off the power completely or unplug the appliance. The easiest way is to connect the appliances to an extension cord with a switch. This way, you can turn off several standby modes with one button.

Check at least these

1. Router/modem

You probably do not to use the internet 24/7. Keep the router connected to the power source only when you really need an internet connection. For example, if you are working remotely from home, turn off or unplug the router at the end of the day and when going on a weekend trip. If we all turn off our network terminal unit every day for 8 hours, electricity will be saved on an annual basis equal to the annual consumption of 1,800 electrically heated detached houses.

2. Digital devices

Modern televisions and other digital devices are in a continuous standby mode, and even though the energy consumption in standby mode is lower than before, it is still pointless. Also, turn off the desktop computer and any separate screens completely. Close the laptop lid.

3. Chargers

Only plug in chargers when you are actively using them, such as a mobile phone charger. Leaving it plugged in can also cause the charger to fail.

4. Applications

Did you know that apps that are open on your phone connect to the server, and at the same time increase electricity consumption where the server is located? Turn off power-consuming positioning services and apps from your phone when you are not actively using them.
