Scents make a home more cosy and meaningful – read tips on using natural scents
Scents can refresh, relax, and support your well-being – at their best, they bind to memories you want to cherish. Elisa Koivumaa, founder and CEO of SEES Company, explains how to use natural scents in everyday life at home.
Natural scents have a powerful effect on the mind and body. Sprinkling scents appropriately in different spaces and at different times of the day can effectively and effortlessly influence your mood and feelings.
"It all starts with simple things, like the dish soap you use to wash your coffee cup. The scent refreshes almost unnoticed when it contains genuine essential oils," describes Elisa Koivumaa.
A home's atmosphere is naturally created by its residents, but sensory experiences also add their own touch. Koivumaa knows it's wonderful to return to a home that pampers all the senses.
"Everything we see, hear, and smell around us affects us. That's why it's important to consider the significance of scents alongside decorative items and furniture," Koivumaa says.
"Sometimes, you don't need new items; you can change the feel of your home in other ways."
If natural scents are not yet part of your daily life, Koivumaa encourages starting with a natural diffuser, such as an aroma stone.
It's a simple and safe way to spread delightful scents at home: drop essential oil onto the aroma stone, which gradually evaporates into the room air.
"You can place the aroma stone first in the hallway, where the scent welcomes you home. Then, move the same stone to the bathroom as a freshener, and at the end of the day, place it in the bedroom to calm you before sleep," Koivumaa lists.
Scent memories delight and bring back cherished moments
Scents have a unique ability to evoke memories and emotions. They imprint on our subconscious and can instantly transport us back years.
"It's wonderful to return to a home that pampers all the senses."
"Everyone has universal scent memories; everyone knows what freshly cut grass smells like. Scent memories can also be personally significant and help process difficult emotions," Koivumaa reflects.
According to Koivumaa, her home smells safe and familiar:
"For us, the home scent is everything from rye bread to bergamot," she says with a smile.
Natural scents can be much more than just a fragrance. At their best, they create peace and bind to memories you want to cherish.
Koivumaa emphasizes that with a small amount of the right scent, you can make your home cosier and, above all, more meaningful.
3 + 1 tips on natural scents
- Lavender for better sleep: Lavender is known for its calming properties and as an excellent sleep aid, making it perfect for the bedroom. Put a drop of lavender on the wash label of your pillowcase, from where it will evaporate into the room air.
- Citrus scents to invigorate in the morning: Citrus scents refresh and energize. Use a citrus scent in the morning in the bathroom, for example, in hand soap, to give your day an energetic start.
- Eucalyptus to relax: Eucalyptus opens the airways and relaxes muscles and the body. Therefore, eucalyptus is an excellent sauna companion. Just add a drop of eucalyptus to the sauna water.
+ Don't own a diffuser or aroma stone? Elisa Koivumaa encourages trying a pine cone picked from nature as a diffuser, onto which you can drop a few drops of oil.
